Types of Bronte Glen Dog Beds

We manufacture four types of dog beds at our West Yorkshire working mill, all made from premium quality materials designed to keep your pup comfortable and cosy. Below is a breakdown of the types of dog beds we offer and what they're good for.

Luxury Merino Wool Dog Beds

Merino Wool Dog Bed

Our Merino Wool Dog Beds are manufactured using upholstery-grade material using 100% wool fabric, which is processed and filled in our mill to create a luxe, warm, cosy and durable sleep surface.

The inner cushion is filled with our bouncy balled polyester dog bed filling for maximum comfort that doesn't clump (unlike many other dog beds out there). It's the perfect level of cushioning to support your pup's joints and provide them with a good night's sleep.

It’s available in a classic cream colour that’s perfect for any home.

These beds are great for:
  • Comfortable sleeping areas
  • Older dogs and dogs who need more support
  • Keeping dogs cool in summer and warm in winter

Tweed Wool Dog Beds

Tweed Dog Bed

Our Tweed Wool Dog Beds are made using British wool, which provides another excellent sleep surface for your pet.

Just like our Merino Wool Beds, they’re filled with balled polyester for a soft and supportive sleep surface that doesn’t clump.

You can choose from various classic country-style colours and patterns to suit your pup's personality or your home decor.

Plus, we have a great range of sizes, with the ability to create custom-size pet beds if needed.

This type of bed is great for:
  • All breeds and ages of dogs
  • Providing adequate joint support for your furry friend
  • Homes with an elegant interior

Senior Gold 7+ Cosy Dog Beds

Senior Gold 7 plus Pet Bed Cosy Wheat

We haven't forgotten about older dogs, and our Senior Gold 7+ range is an excellent choice. These beds feature a heavyweight pile fabric with a special antibacterial wool blend that provides lots of comfort and warmth.

The cushion inserts are filled with that same polyester ball fibre filling as our Wool Dog Beds, but the fabric is heavier and denser for extra support.

This type of bed is great for:
  • Providing additional joint support
  • Providing the warmth and comfort elderly dogs need
  • Creating an antibacterial sleep surface

Trojan Waterproof Dog Beds

Trojan Cosy Waterproof Dog Bed

Our Trojan Waterproof Dog Beds are one of our most popular products.

These pet beds are crafted using Ballistic nylon fabric – the same fabric that's used for Police and army-issue Bullet and stabproof vests, in fact. So if you have a puppy that likes to get its teeth into things or a cheeky pup that loves to dig, our Trojan Waterproof Dog Beds are just the thing you need.

As well as being incredibly tough and hard-wearing, these beds are waterproof, so they're ideal for mucky pups or those who are prone to accidents. Not to mention, they're washable!

Once again, the inner cushion is filled with our balled polyester dog bed filling, which won't clump over time. Plus, you have a great range of colours and sizes to choose from.

These beds are ideal for:
  • Travelling (especially for muddy walks)
  • Puppies and dogs that chew or dig
  • Dogs that are prone to accidents
  • Kennels and working dogs

Which Material is Best for Your Dog’s Bed?

Knowing whether to choose our snug wool or polyester material or our tough-as-nails, waterproof Ballistic nylon material is something you should consider when looking for a new dog bed.

We understand that knowing which type of material is best for your pup might seem tricky with the different choices available, but we're here to help guide you!

Merino & British Wool Fabric

Woolen fabric for dog beds

The Merino wool used for our Merino Dog Beds is perfect for helping keep your pup warm while providing a comfortable and supportive sleep area. A similar level of support can be found in our Tweed Wool Dog Beds, made with British wool.

Our Senior Gold 7+ Dog Beds are made with a blend of wool and polyester to provide a superior level of support that older dogs need to keep them comfortable and protect their joints. In fact, our wool blend beds can provide better support than memory foam beds.

Of course, these materials are great for all pups, but they're especially great for senior dogs or those who suffer from joint pain. In fact, our Senior Gold Beds are a great all-round option.

Our wool has fantastic heat-retention properties, which help to regulate your pet's temperature as they sleep, keeping them warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Overall, our Wool Beds are a great choice whether you have new puppies or an older pooch.

Ballistic Nylon Fabric

Ballistic Nylon Fabric

As the name suggests, our ballistic nylon fabric is incredibly tough and hard-wearing. It's the same material that's used for Police and army-issue bullet and stab-proof vests, proving that these beds are seriously durable. Your dog will have a hard time trying to chew through this!

It's also waterproof, so it's an ideal choice if you walk your dog through muddy fields or they're partial to jumping in puddles. It's incredibly easy to keep clean (a simple wipe-down does the job most of the time, but the whole bed is machine washable), saving you time and hassle.

Aside from being incredibly durable, it's also super comfy, making it a great choice for any pup.

What Size Dog Bed Do I Need?

What size dog bed

Once you have decided on which type of bed you'd like for your pup, the next step is to work out what size would be best. Whether you have small dogs or large dogs, you can't get the right dog bed without the right dimensions.

All of our dog bedding comes in 6 standard sizes, which are:

  • Small – 56x56cm
  • Medium – 72x72cm
  • Large – 86x86cm
  • Giant – 100x100cm
  • Rectangle Cosy Plus Medium – 56x72cm
  • Rectangle Cosy Plus XL – 72x100cm

We have an entire Dog Bed Size Chart blog post that goes into detail on the various sizes we sell here at Bronte Glen, but we'll go through the basics here as well.

Bespoke Dog Bedding Sizes

Dog Bed Sizes

Since we manufacture all of our beds ourselves, we can also create custom sizes if necessary.

We know that not every dog is the same, and they all have different needs or preferences (it's why we love them!). So, if none of the standard sizes works for your pup, we can make you a bespoke bed tailored to their exact measurements.

This is perfect for larger breeds or those with unusual body shapes.

How to Measure Your Dog for Their Bed

First and foremost, you'll need to measure your dog for their bed. We recommend measuring your pup from the tip of their nose to the base of their tail and the top of their shoulder to the ground.

This will give you an idea of how long and wide your pup is so you can estimate what size bed would be best. As long as the bed is bigger than your dog, it'll be comfortable.

What Type of Sleeper is Your Dog?

By this, we simply mean what position your dog sleeps in. Are they a side sleeper, or do they curl up? Do they like to sprawl out? We've put together this helpful infographic to help you decide what kind of sleeper your dog is.

dog sleeping positions

If your dog usually stretches out when they're asleep, you might want to consider going for a larger size bed so your pup has plenty of space. Alternatively, a mattress bed can give them the additional space they need.

If they tend to curl up or sleep without taking up too much space, then stick to their normal size and consider a bed from our Cosy bed range to give them support all the way around.

How to Wash Our Dog Beds

One of the many amazing features of our beds is they are incredibly easy to keep clean, whether you're simply spot-cleaning or giving them a deep clean after a particularly muddy walk.

For our Trojan Dog Beds, a damp cloth or sponge is enough to remove any dirt or hair from the surface. And for our Wool Dog Beds, give them a shake-off or use a dog hair brush or lint roller to remove dirt and hair. Hanging them outside on the line is also a good way to freshen them up.

When you do need to wash them, however, the beds can be washed easily in a domestic washing machine. All our bed covers are removable and machine washable for convenience. The inner cushioning can also be machine-washed for a deeper clean.

Washing Wool Dog Beds

To wash our Bronte Glen Merino, Tweed and Senior Gold 7+ Beds, follow as below:

  1. Remove the cushion inserts from the side using the velcro fastening.
  2. Unzip the outer cover of the mattress and remove the cushion inserts.
  3. Place the wool cover into the washing machine and put on a cool, delicate wash using our Nikwax Wool Wash. Our Senior Gold can be washed on a regular 30-degree cycle.
  4. The cushion inserts can also be washed, but we recommend washing these separately (unless filled with wool).
  5. Allow the bed to air dry.
  6. Pop it all back together, and your pup will have a fresh new sleeping space!

Washing Waterproof Dog Beds

To wash our Trojan Waterproof Dog Beds:

  1. Follow the same instructions above to dismantle the bed and remove the cushion inserts.
  2. Place the cover into the wash on a 30°C cycle temperature with our Nikwax Tech Wash
  3. Once cleaned, you'll need to re-waterproof the cover, so pop it into the wash with our Nikwax TX Direct Wash-In. (We include a free sachet of both Nikwax Tech Wash and Nikwax TX Direct Wash-In with every Trojan Bed.)
  4. The cushion inserts can then be washed separately.
  5. Hang outside to dry.
  6. Pop it all back together for your pup!

Benefits of Using a Luxury Dog Bed

Luxury Dog Beds

Quite often, we're asked, 'Does my dog need a bed?'. Our answer is always yes – here's why:

1. Comfort & Health

A dog bed provides a comfortable and supportive place for your pup to sleep, preventing them from sleeping on hard surfaces like the kitchen floor or the cold ground.

If your dog suffers from joint problems or other issues, like hip dysplasia, a good dog bed can help relieve their pain and prevent further damage.

As a puppy owner, durability is important to me. Whilst knowing it was important for my pup to have a safe, comfortable place to rest, constant repairs and worrying about my pup’s safety when left alone with a bed was a constant stress.

As a vet, my patients’ comfort is a priority. From arthritic patients to those recovering from surgery, they need a soft, supportive, and clean environment.”

2. Hygiene

A dog bed is much easier to clean than your rugs, carpets and furniture, so it helps keep your pup's sleeping area hygienic, which can help reduce allergies and other health concerns.

Not only that, but it makes the space more hygienic for you, too!

Bedding that wicks away urine or spilt water in kennels so wounds are not contaminated is a key consideration.”

- Dr Lily Richards BSc (Hons) BVSc MRCVS – Veterinary Surgeon and Medical Writer

3. Security

Dogs like their own space, and a bed gives them just that – a place that's all their own. This can help them feel secure and settled, reducing stress levels in the long run.

Choose Bronte Glen Dog Beds for Your Pup

If you’d ask my nurses, they’d have said bedding that's easy to clean and wash was most important. A bedding that could cover all bases, is durable, comfortable, supportive, and easy to clean as described by Bronte Glen dog bedding is ideal for home and veterinary clinic use.”
